With such a windy day out, we decided to try our luck at kite-flying. Apparently our luck blew away with the wind. We looked all over the house for Evan's trusty Go Diego Go kite. We couldn't find it, so we decided to run to Walmart to get a couple of cheap ones. When we got there we headed to the toy section, which is where a kite should be, right? Well, the kite expert employee there sent us to seasonal where the other kite expert employee sent us to toys. After an exhausting kite search, we learned that Superstore Walmart does not carry cheap kites. They had one for $10, but thankfully, we ill-fated kite flyers didn't fall for that one.
On to Robert's. Yes, it's a weird place to buy kites, but I had seen cute ones there a couple of days before. We went in, and for under $5, we were good to go. We thought our luck was getting better. We found a space shuttle kite for Evan and a helicopter one for Kabe. Everyone was happy!
We headed over to the baseball field by Don's old church house, which, as a side note, is a fantastic kite flying location. We got Evan's kite up, and he was having a great time. Then we gave Kabe his. He loved it! For a full 5 seconds he had a wonderful time! Right up until the point where a gust of wind pulled the string holdy-thing right out of his chubby little hands and the kite, string and all, went up, up, and away. Literally! We watched it fly for probably a full minute. Then it crashed somewhere in no-man's land. Don drove around for awhile and tried to find it, but it was gone. We've got to start writing our name and phone number on newly purchased kites.
While Don was on his search for the lost kite, Evan's kite suddenly didn't fly so well. When we checked it out, the stick that holds the wings apart was gone, and the poor space shuttle would no longer take flight. Total kite flying time: 5 minutes. And that's probably an overestimate. Total kite flying time that Don witnessed: 5 seconds.
Moral of the story: Hide your kites when we're around!

Not to rub it in, but we had some serious kite flying yesterday. We even attached the string to a tree and let it soar while we bbq-ed. It was up for probably over an hour.
Ah Man! sorry about the rotten kite luck! I wonder if those "kite experts" at WalMart know what they are talking about, because I have definitely seen $2-$3 kites there in the toy section before. Maybe that was just in the Logan WalMart.
